Happy New Year!?

It’s September, the first day the kiddos go back to school.  For twenty-four years it was my first day back to work as a Secondary School Librarian.

Everyone is decked out in new clothes, carrying new backpacks and lunch bags, and don’t forget those new shoes!  Walking in to the school the hallway floors are the shiniest they will be all year.  You can smell the cleaners used to scrub everything down.

The excitement in the air is evident as students tell their friends and teachers what they did all summer.  Students see friends they have missed all summer.  Teachers are brimming with new ideas and lessons they have worked on for the last week ofall summer.

New school calendars and agendas are given out.  Ten whole months of blank pages to fill!  The weather is nice and brings with it a sense of new adventure.

All of this excitement has always felt more to me like a whole new year than January 1.  (Don’t get my wrong I do love the REAL New Year as well – I did get married on New Year’s Eve after all!)

But my real sense of renewal and adventure is firmly rooted with back to school, back to routines, back to sports for my sons and back to work.  Even in retirement things haven’t changed, I now get to see all of the excitement in my Grands and Eldest (who is a teacher).

So I am wishing you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!

P.S. I didn’t forget that it is Taking Off the Weight Tuesday…I didn’t…take off the weight that is 🙁
